Boise SEO: Keyword Research

Lots of #SEO companies promise they can get you to #1 in Google – and honestly IT’S EASY! Especially if they get you there for keywords no one is searching for! Your site may be optimized, but that doesn’t mean it’s optimized for the best terms.

Case in point: for YEARS the highest sought after phrase for REALTORS® in Idaho’s Treasure Valley has been “Boise Idaho Real Estate” and because of that it has some of the highest competition in the region. Sad Fact: it was searched for over HALF as many times as Boise Homes.

How do you know what to optimize for? RESEARCH. There are a number of great tools out there for doing just that but the latest and my current new favorite comes right from the big brothers at Google, called Insights.

BOISE SEO BLOG: Build Better Backlinks

Backlinks are essentially links from external websites to your website. Why are they important? Backlinks are important because keyword density will only get you so far in many cases ( high keyword difficulty phrases like BOISE SEO ). The more people vying for a particular phrase makes it more difficult to gain good placement for those searches; beyond having good keyword focused text the next best way to do that is with backlinks.

Links to your website from other (preferably well ranked sites) essentially lend credibility to your website with the search engines. If 5,000 people are linking to your website saying it is THE source for Boise Ghost Blogging for instance, guess what, the search engines will believe those 5,000 people and give you a bump up in the search results.

While having 5,000 people linking to your website is good, it’s not as good as perhaps having 100 high quality links pointed to your site. So what determines quality? For the most part it is determined by PageRank.

“PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page,used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set….”

You can see what a websites pagerank is by using online tools like the one here to determine a sites basic backlink quality.

Other factors that make a site a good source of backlinking is the sites content (is it related to your audience or genre), and the amount of traffic that website itself receives.

Ways to Create Backlinks

Social Networks – Many social sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn will allow you to add links to your website, the problem with many of those sites is that they attach a nasty bit of code to their links called NOFOLLOW. This essentially tells spiderbots not to follow the link or lend it credibility towards your overall backlinking numbers. Don’t discount having links on social networks to your main site, they are still important and can deliver live person traffic to your website, but from a backlinking perspective they are somewhat a neutral item.

Blogs – blogs, like this one, are a great way to create backlinks. It is important to market the blogs themselves or no one will ever see the links or content you’ve made there, so by all means if you make a blog, MARKET the blog. Blogs are a great way to create informative content and get it out easily to your prospective viewers.

Comment on Blogs – find blogs others in your industry have written and comment on their posts. Sometimes these links too will contain the dreaded NOFOLLOW code but they are still working to get your link out there and chances are if you do it right the people who read that blog will click your link to see more about what you are talking about or who you are.

Directories Etc – Sites like DIGG, Stumbleupon, etc all allow you to publish your blogs and content to a wider audience. This can lead to better linkage and a wider audience of visitors.

Email Blasts and Signatures – by all means put a link to your site in your email signature. Every email you send can then potentially lead to your website, this won’t count as a true backlink per se but it can help drive traffic. eBlasts work much the same, get a list together and send out an email copy of your latest blog or current special, it’s a last resort in many cases but it can help drive traffic up.

It’s MORE than just making links tho…
You can create links all over the place like this one: click here and then wonder why you aren’t seeing any results. You see it’s more than JUST a link pointed to your site.

While yes, the link itself IS important it is even more important to have the TEXT of that link be related to your targeted keyword. You will notice up above I linked out to a few places using keywords like BOISE SEO and Boise Ghost Blogging…that was intentional. You see those whacky little internet spiders don’t just count where the link is going to but also what words the “anchor text” of the link is made of…

The code of a link looks something like what you see here:

the HREF is the address the link goes to

the target (in this case) just tells the browser to open it in a new/blank winow

the words between the A HREF code and the closing /A tag is what is called the ANCHOR TEXT. By customizing this text wherever possible you can make your backlinks even more potent.

If all the links to your website have the anchor text MY WEBSITE you are actively trying to gain position/credibility for the phrase “my website”…of which there are over 1 billion people doing the same (likely unknowingly). It is thereby best to use your keywords when linking to your website whenever possible. Many directories or other sites won’t give you any option, but often they ask for a “Name” for the link; instead of putting “my website” put your keyword…this is one reason why blogs are wonderful, because they make it easy to create custom anchor text links within a post.

It’s quite simply to improve ANY websites search engine position if you know the basics and how to use them effectively. If the competition is astronomical you may have to work harder to gain ground, or target more localized or niche markets to see better results there first, but creating EFFECTIVE properly formatted backlinks whenever possible can be a real boost; something that just about anyone who is trying to improve their search engine placement can do.

Boise SEO Blog: SEO Basics

Thank you for visiting my humble Boise SEO blog. It is my hope to share with you my knowledge regarding the world of search engine optimization and how you can apply very basic, easy to use, tactics to improve your website.

Search engine optimization often seems to be all smoke and mirrors to most people, but in truth it really is not that wildly difficult to understand and grasp in order to harness the power of search engines to improve your website traffic, sales, and digital presence.

It really comes down to just a few key factors deciding how your website is positioned in search engine results pages (SERP). Lets look at a couple most important factors:

Content – Not JUST content but KEYWORD rich content. Keywords are the targeted words or phrases that you want to use in order for people to find you in search results. Use your keywords within your websites text as often as possible without sounding like a broken record or “stuffing” your site. For instance, one of my keywords is Boise SEO; as you have seen I’ve used it a couple times in this blog post. Not only that, often when I have used it I will make it a link to the website or page I wish to lend a little “google juice” to. Which brings us to our next SEO factor….

Linking – Backlinks, or links from other sites to yours tend to be most important, but internal links have also now become valid and important as a positioning factor as well. By establishing incoming links from other quality well positioned websites to your site you gain credibility with the search engines – they figure if you have 5,000 sites pointing to you saying “This is a resource for Boise SEO” that there must be something to those links; thusly they give you a bump up in the search engine results. Internal links on your site (links to other pages on your site) are important as well as they demonstrate an interc0nnectivity and flow of information, as well as a larger picture of your overall site footprint. For instance in this paragraph I will tell you if you want to know what a blog is to follow the link I just made. Sites with more pages, obviously contain more content, and sites with more content and more links to that content are easier to navigate for users and search engines like that.

Keyword Difficulty – this isn’t something you will really have any control over. Keyword Difficulty is basically the number of websites competing to gain placement for a particular term or phrase. When you search on Google you will see up at the top the number of results; that is a good general way to judge difficulty for a keyphrase without using third party software or tools. The more people vying to be number one for a phrase (like Boise SEO) the more difficult it will be for newcomers or any one particular site to gain placement for that word or phrase without putting in some footwork. If you find there is very very low difficulty for a given keyword it may not be best to focus on gaining ground for that search as obviously many people may not be searching for Purple Zebra Hacksaws….

A basic formula for this might read Keyword Density + #of Backlinks – Keyword Difficulty &  = SERP

INSIDER SEO TIP: a rule of thumb I go by is that if you see less than 200,000 results for any given phrase you search on, chances are you should be able to EASILY gain position for that search with minimal work [ie keyword density alone in many cases].

Lesser Factors that Impact Search Engine Position:

Age of the site: this is quickly becoming less of a factor but for a while just by having a site for a long time you could gain some credibility.

Meta-Tags: Really not SO important. Your title tag will carry a little more weight, but really these tags just count towards your overall keyword density more than being any sort of magic SEO bullet.

Page Load Time: yes, the time it takes for your site to load is now becoming a factor in search engine placement; will likely become an even bigger factor in the future with the advent of live searches and more mobile users. It is for this reason (thankfully) that simplicity and sanity may soon return to an internet near you.

These things are really just the tip of the iceberg, and honestly this post was written a bit self-servingly to assist in my own little Boise SEO experiment – but you will note that I did not just tout “buy my stuff buy my stuff” or promise to “demystify” SEO secrets and then only give you a bunch of fluff. I SHARE my SEO knowledge as much as I can in order to help make a better more well informed online community – because after all god knows I can only handle so many SEO, Boise Ghost Blogging and Idaho Social Management customers on my own anyway! ; )

Facebook: Profile or Page

So you’ve finally woke up, joined the rest of us living in the 21st century, and jumped on the ole social networking bandwagon by gettin you some Facebooking action. Well congratulations – but that’s only the first step.

See, a Facebook profile is sort of standard. If you intend to do more with Facebook other than just grow crops, or poke friends then you need to know the differences between a standard Facebook Profile and a Facebook Fan Page.

Is it really THAT important?
Well, technically YES. Facebook intends for your personal interactions to be separate from your business advertisements. This is even in their Terms of Use, so by advertising your real estate or seafood company on your personal profile you may be in violation of their Terms and can even get your profile deleted!

So what’s the difference?

A Facebook Profile is personal. Use it to talk to friends, post vacation pictures, play games, and all that fun stuff.

A Facebook Fan Page is where Facebook intends for you to advertise your business, company, group, or products.

Knowing the difference can help you get more out of Facebook. When someone Googles your name on Facebook they will generally be taken to your profile page where they will see your pretty photo, maybe some of your friends, and what pages you are a fan of…so great, everyone that visits this page knows what you look like and that you love Krispy Kreme donuts…doesn’t really help advertise your business or services much does it? When you have a Fan Page however visitors will see your photo or logo, can see your wall, posts by fans, and if you add some plugins you can even display images and text — which not only can add much needed visual interest to your Facebook portal but can also provide search engines with extra information and links to drive traffic to your main site or services.

So as you can see by these examples this is quite a bit of difference in the appearance as well as the spider-able content available for search engines.

Facebook and other social networking sites are not a trend. They are here to stay and are changing the way search engine optimization is done. To make the most of these networks you need to be in the know as to how to use them to your greatest advantage. Content is KING – SEO Tips

The rules have changed since the early days of search engine optimization (SEO). In the beginning your meta-tags had considerable pull regarding how you placed in search results. While they are still important and should not be neglected most search engines have moved on to using the textual content of your site to determine its importance and relevance to your search terms.

In real estate the tried and true rule of location location location is still key to a property’s value. For search engines it’s Content Content Content! Creating relevant, keyword dense, text for your website is the best sure-fire way to improve your search position. This does not mean it’s ok to fill your site with “Boise Idaho Real Estate” over and over again in a nonsense paragraph as this not only makes you site look bad to human readers but to search engines as well. What it does mean is that you will want to consider your keywords and work them into your text in a way that instances of your keywords are frequent but the text still makes sense to your human visitors.

For example, your original website text might read: “If you are looking for real estate you’ve come to the right place! I am glad to help you find the home of your dreams. Use my search options to find homes in the local area real estate market.”

Whereas a section of text optimized for the words/phrase ‘Boise Idaho Real Estate’ might read more like: “If you are looking for Boise Idaho Real Estate, or real state anywhere in Idaho you’ve come to the right place! I am glad to help you find the home of your dreams in the great state of Idaho. Use my Idaho Home Search to find Homes in Idaho and the local Boise Idaho Real Estate market.”

As you can see I have increased the number of times the words Boise Idaho Real and Estate appear in the text and have done so in a manner that not only increases the keyword density but also makes a more pleasant reading experience for the viewer as well. This is a very simple example, but the concept is there.

Filling your site with textual content relevant to your services and filled with the keywords you want to gain position for is key to improving search engine placement. Once you are able to do this be sure to add new content often as the only thing search engines love more than content is NEW content; by regularly adding new relevant text content to your site you can actually increase the number of times a search engine will visit your site for results and add a hefty lift to your placement in searches.
